Partitioning a Windows Dedicated Server's Second Hard Drives

Partitioning the hard drive of your Windows® dedicated server can help you keep your data organized. It can also help maximize the speed and performance of your server.
Select the operating system for your server to view steps for partitioning the hard drive.
Partitioning A Windows 2003 Hard Drive
Use this process to partition your Windows 2003 dedicated server.
To Partition a Windows 2003 Dedicated Server
- Log in to your server using Remote Desktop Connection.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Double click Administrative Tools.
- Double click Computer Management.
- Double click Storage.
- Double click Disk Management. If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard opens, click Cancel.
- Right click Disk 1.
- Select Initialize Disk.
- Click OK.
- Right click Unallocated Partition.
- Select New Partition.
- Click Next.
- Select Primary Partition and enter the size for this partition.
- Assign a drive letter for your new partition.
- To start formatting, click Next.
Note: Formatting causes loss of data! If you have data on your server that you do not want to lose, select Do not format this volume.
Partitioning A Windows 2008 Hard Drive
Use this process to partition your Windows 2008 dedicated server.
To Partition a Windows 2008 Dedicated Server
- Log in to your server using Remote Desktop Connection.
- Open the Control Panel.
- Double click Administrative Tools.
- Double click Computer Management.
- Double click Storage.
- Double click Disk Management. If the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard opens, click Cancel.
- Right click on Disk 1.
- Select New Simple Volume... and click Next.
- Select the maximum volume size for this partition. By default, the entire volume is selected. Click Next.
- Assign a drive letter for your new partition.
- Click Next.
- Select Format this volume with the following settings.
Note: Selecting this option will cause loss of data! If you have data on your server that you do not want to lose, select Do not format this volume.
- Click Next.
- Review the settings, then click Finish to begin setup.
