Connecting to Your Shared Hosting Account with FTP-SSL

If you are the primary FTP user, you can secure your FTP connection using FTP-SSL. FTP-SSL encrypts the data transfer to and from your Shared Hosting account.

To use this option, you need a third party FTP client as most operating systems do not natively support FTP-SSL. Some popular clients are:

 

To Determine if FTP-SSL is Supported on Your Shared Hosting Account

  1. Connect to your Shared Hosting account with an FTP client using the standard FTP protocol.
  2. If FTP-SSL is available, the FTP client displays the following in the welcome message: FTP-SSL (AUTH TLS, Explicit FTPS or FTPES) security is available.

 

To Connect to Your Shared Hosting Account Using FTP-SSL

  1. Create a new connection in your FTP client.

    NOTE: Some clients have separate connection options: One option for creating a standard FTP connection and one for creating an FTP-SSL connection. Use the FTP-SSL option, if available.

  2. Specify the connection type. This setting is usually found in a box labeled Connect Using or Servertype. Depending upon your FTP client, you may see any of the following valid options:
    • FTPES
    • AUTH TLS
    • Explicit FTPS
  3. Use the following information to configure the remaining settings:
    FTP User Name
    This is the user name for your hosting account.
    FTP Password
    This your password for your hosting account.
    website URL
    http://www.example.com
    FTP Site URL
    ftp://www.example.com
    Start Directory
    Some FTP clients will ask for a "Home" or "Start" directory. Our hosting service does not require this. Leave the box blank. If the client requires a value, enter a single forward slash followed by your hosting account user name (i.e., /<user name>).
