Connecting to Your Hosting Account with FileZilla (FTP)
FileZilla is a free File Transfer Protocol (FTP) client for Windows®, Mac®, and Linux® operating systems. You can download it from http://filezilla-project.org.
FTP clients let you move files from your local computer to another computer over the Internet — in this case, the other computer is the server housing your hosting account. You will use an FTP client to move your website's files from your computer to your hosting account, making your files visible on the internet whenever someone visits your domain name.
Using FileZilla with Your Hosting Account
To use FileZilla with your hosting account, you will need accurate hosting FTP settings.

- To set up your hosting account. See Set up your account for more information.
- Your hosting account IP address. See Find IP address of your website for more information.
- Your hosting account user name. See Find your FTP login/username for more information.
- Your hosting account password. See Reset your FTP username and password
for more information.
NOTE: This is not necessarily the same as your customer account password.
Once you have everything in order, you can connect to your hosting account with FileZilla.
Connecting to Your Hosting Account with FileZilla
To connect to your hosting account, download FileZilla and follow the instructions below.
To Connect to Your Hosting Account with FileZilla
- Launch FileZilla from your computer.
- Complete the following fields, and then click Quickconnect:
- Host — Enter your hosting account IP address.
- Username — Enter your hosting account user name.
- Password — Enter your hosting account password.
If you have problems connecting to your hosting account, it is most likely caused by an incorrect password. See Reset your FTP username and password for more information. - Port — Type 22 for sFTP.
NOTE: Our Managed WordPress accounts can only connect via sFTP.
- Host — Enter your hosting account IP address.
Once connected, FileZilla displays the contents of your hosting account on the right, in the Remote site section, and the contents of your computer on the left in the Local site section.

To Transfer Files to Your Hosting Account with FileZilla
- Locate the Local site files you want to transfer to your hosting account.
- FileZilla displays the contents of your Local Site starting at your operating system's root level. Navigate to a more familiar location in your computer's file structure by double-clicking
Users
, your profile name, and thenDesktop
or your primary documents folder. - The files you upload to that directory should have an index file. This file is likely,
index.html
orindex.htm

- FileZilla displays the contents of your Local Site starting at your operating system's root level. Navigate to a more familiar location in your computer's file structure by double-clicking
- Select the Local site files. There are two ways to select multiple files:
- Select one file, and then, holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, select another file from the list to continue your selection. The two chosen files and all files between them are selected.
- Select one file, and then, holding down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, select another file from the list to continue your selection. In this way, you can add or remove single files in your selection.
- Locate the Remote site directory you want to transfer your files to. You'll want to use your website's root directory (more info).
- Move the files from the Local site to the Remote site by dragging and dropping them.
Drag and Drop — Select the Local site files that you want to upload. Click and drag them to the Remote site directory. When the directory is highlighted, you can drop the files (let go of the mouse) and the files will upload.
