The .it country-code top-level domain name (ccTLD) is an extension that represents Italy. For companies that conduct business in Italy and individuals who want to reach the growing number of Internet users there, .it domain names are a good investment. Registering a .it domain name gives you regional recognition and an easy-to-manage Web presence.

Who can register .it domain names?

Individual and juridical persons residing in or belonging to a EU Member State can register .it domain names. All others can use our trustee service to register a .it domain.

You can register a domain name that contains letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), and the hyphen (-). The domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen, and it cannot begin with "xn--". The domain name length must be between three and 63 characters in length.

To Register .it Domain Names

  1. On our Home page, in the Domain Name Search field, enter the domain name.
  2. Select .it from the list.
  3. Click Go, and then proceed through the screens to complete the purchase.
    • If your country of origin is Italy, you must enter the Registrant Fiscal Code.
    • If your country is within the European Union, you must enter the Identity Document Number, or the numerals that display on an official form of identification.
    • If you do not meet the residency requirements, we automatically charge you a trustee vendor fee of $19.99 per year. The trustee helps you meet the residency requirement and is a third-party vendor. If someone contacts the trustee with an issue regarding your domain name, the trustee contacts us, and then we contact you.

NOTE: When our trustee service is used for a .it domain registration, the trustee service will review the registration request within 24 hours of purchase. They do this to prevent trademark infringement and reduce the number of disputes or legal issues.

If the registration request is approved, the domain name will complete registration, but if the registration request is denied, the domain name will not be registered and all registration fees will be refunded.

Which registry controls .it domain names?

Registro.it is the registry for .it domain names.

For how long can I register .it domain names?

The minimum and maximum registration length for .it domain names is one year.

When do .it domain names renew?

You can renew your .it domain name within six months of its expiration date. You must, however, renew it before its expiration date. The renewal date depends on whether you auto-renew or manually renew the domain name. We attempt auto-renewal on the first day of the month prior to the domain name's expiration date.

If the renewal attempt fails, we re-attempt renewal on the 10th of the month and again on the 20th of the month. If we cannot auto-renew the domain name and you do not manually renew it by the 20th of the month prior to the expiration date, you can attempt to recover it, and there might be a fee to do so.

For example: Your .it domain name expires on October 10. If your domain name does not renew automatically, you can renew it manually by September 20. For automatic renewals, we attempt to renew the domain name on September 1, September 10, and September 20.

Are there nameserver requirements for my .it domain names?

Yes. All .it domain names must have two to six authoritative nameservers. Before you register or update the domain name, you must list only those nameservers in its zone file. Additionally, all IP addresses on the mameservers created do need to be unique IP addresses.

If you want to register a .it domain name with us and use our nameservers, we handle this process for you.

If you want to use your own nameservers, you must set them up before you register or update the domain name. You must also ensure that they are resolving properly before you assign them to the domain name in our system.

TIP: You can use a DNS validation tool to ensure that your nameservers are resolving properly. If you do not have a preferred DNS validator, you can use any search engine to find one.

For example, if you want to register coolexample.com.it and use the nameservers ns1.coolexample.it and ns2.coolexample.it, then you must list those nameservers in the domain name's zone file.

After you set up your nameservers and register or update your domain name, use the instructions in Setting Nameservers for Your Domain Names to set the nameservers in our system. Then, the Registro.it registry must approve or reject them, which can take up to five business days.
