Verifying Your SSL Certificate Request

After requesting your certificate (more info), we validate that you control the domain name which you're trying to secure.

We'll email you requesting any information we need, but this is a list of the things we verify.

Standard Assurance

We verify you own the domain name by checking publicly accessible records in our system and the WHOIS database.

Deluxe Assurance & Code/Driver Signing

We verify yours or your business's:

  • Domain ownership, outlined in the Standard Assurance section of this article

    NOTE: Domain ownership verification does not apply to Code/Driver Signing certificates.

  • Identity
  • Address
  • Telephone number

What documents do I need?

What you'll need to email us depends on whether you requested your certificate for an individual or an organization.

Individuals

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Utility bill, or bank or credit card statement that displays address and phone number

Organizations

  • Business license
  • Sales & Use Tax certificate (neither the number or the FEIN alone are acceptable)
  • "Doing Business As" (DBA) documentation
  • Fictitious-name documentation
  • Occupational Tax Certificate/License
  • Non-profit organization tax exemption certificate
  • Articles of Incorporation
  • Utility bill, or bank or credit card statement that displays address and phone number
  • A letter of attestation from an attorney or CPA

We also verify your phone number by calling it before we issue the certificate.

Extended Validation

We verify your business':

  • Domain name ownership, Information outlined in the Standard Assurance section of this article
  • Information outlined in the Deluxe Assurance section of this article
  • Registration

What documents do I need?

What you'll need to email us depends on your type of business, but could include:

  • Certificate request signed by certificate requestor and certificate approver
  • Signed contact agreement for all initial requests and changes to authorized signer
  • Notarized personal statement attestation (for non-LLC or Inc. businesses)
  • Notarized face-to-face attestation statement (for non-LLC or Inc. businesses)
  • Notarized copy of the photo ID used for identity validation (for non-LLC or Inc. businesses)
  • Verified legal opinion or certified public accountant letter, depending on results from other validation methods
